I have eaten a lot of fried fish in this town, and my arteries have the receipts to prove it. Goldsboro is not a place that needs a white-tablecloth seafood tower to impress, but our options stretch from the ghost pepper challenge at Vailhouse to the Latin char of the blackened salmon at Brisas, with the kind of unpretentious range that keeps a local honest.

The proof is in the simple stuff, like the flounder at Atlantic Seafood that arrives with your name already remembered. Consider this list your printed GPS for the next time you want to test both the oyster bar and the strip-mall soul.

Steak cooked and seasoned perfectly
Large group served efficiently
All steaks arrived together promptly

Lane Tree Grill handles a big table with surprising ease. I brought eight people, and we never felt rushed or forgotten. The steaks came out exactly as ordered, each one cooked with a proper crust and a rosy center. Seasoning was confident without being salty. Sides were standard but solid. If you are in a group, this is a dependable choice. The kitchen clearly knows how to time multiple entrées. I would return for a weeknight dinner when I want no fuss and a reliable cut of beef. Just call ahead if your party is large; they seem to appreciate the warning, and it shows in the service.

Favorite Smithfield's location
Fresh chicken and pork
Friendly, perfect customer service
Great fries and sweet tea
Reliable classic BBQ sides

This is my favorite Smithfield's location in the area, and I have been to a few. The chicken is consistently fresh, with that crisp skin and juicy meat you hope for. The pulled pork has a good smoke level, though the sauce leans sweet. Service was friendly and quick, even during the lunch rush. The fries were hot, and the sweet tea tasted properly brewed, not watery. Sides like the coleslaw and hush puppies were standard but fresh. If you want dependable barbecue without drama, this is the spot. I left full and satisfied, which is all I ask from a chain with this name.

Bold, perfectly balanced seasonings
Fast, friendly service from Greta
Fresh oysters and mussels
Fantastic hot pot worth sharing
Reliable spot for delicious seafood

Umami Seafood / Boiling Crab House earns its name with bold, confident seasonings. The oysters were briny and fresh, served on the half shell with a mignonette that did not overpower. Mussels came in a garlicky broth that I sopped up with bread. Greta, our server, was fast and personable, checking in just the right amount. The place gets busy, but the turnover is quick. Prices are reasonable for the quality. If you like your seafood with a kick, this is a reliable choice. I would steer you toward the shellfish, as the fried items are less memorable. Still, a solid spot for a casual meal.

Worth returning for

Young Seafood LLC is a small operation, and the owner clearly cares about what comes out of the kitchen. The wild-caught salmon was cooked perfectly, flaky and moist, with a simple lemon butter that let the fish shine. The shrimp were plump and sweet, and the price was surprisingly low for the portions. The owner took time to explain where the catch came from, which I appreciated. It is not fancy, but it is honest. If you want fresh seafood without frills, this is your place. I left wondering why I do not come here more often.

Raw oysters and crab legs
Attentive waitress service
Best bang bang shrimp
Ghost oyster challenge
Delish potato salad

Vailhouse Oyster Bar & Grille delivers on the basics. The raw oysters were cold and clean, and the crab legs were meaty with a nice sweet flavor. Our waitress was attentive, refilling drinks without being asked. The bang bang shrimp had a good creamy heat, though it was a bit heavy on the sauce. There is also a ghost pepper option for the brave; I tried it and it lived up to the name, so be warned. The potato salad was creamy and tangy. It is a comfortable, no-nonsense seafood spot. I would return for the oysters and the service.

Friendly, personal service every visit
Reliable spot for seafood
Worth the drive back

Atlantic Seafood is the kind of place where the owner remembers your usual order. The flounder is always fresh, caught locally and fried or grilled to order. It comes out hot and flaky, with a light breading that does not mask the fish. The staff is friendly and the service is personal, which is rare these days. I have been coming here for years, and they have never missed once. If you are willing to drive a bit, it is worth the trip. The sides are simple but good, and the portions are generous. This is my go-to for a reliable seafood dinner.

Zabb Siam Asian Eatery surprised me with a five-dish sampling that covered all the bases. The seafood was fresh, especially the shrimp and squid, which were tender and not chewy. The owner came by to check on us personally, which was a nice touch. Portions were generous, and I left with leftovers. The flavors were bold and balanced, with just the right amount of heat. The decor is polished, making it suitable for a nicer meal. I called ahead for takeout once, and they had it ready on time. This is a dependable spot for Asian seafood done right.

Highlights
Staff outshines the food
Worth the small detour
Massive menu with pizza
Tender pulled beef standout
Sides rotate daily, try collards

McCall's BBQ & Seafood is a curious mix, but it works. The staff is friendlier than the food is memorable, though the pulled beef is a standout on the barbecue side. They also have a massive menu that includes pizza, which I did not try, but it seems popular. The sides rotate daily, and I was lucky enough to catch collards that were properly cooked with a bit of vinegar. The barbecue is smoky and saucy, the seafood is standard. It is a bit out of the way, but if you are nearby, it is worth a short detour. I would go back for the beef and the collards.

Momento Tapas & Craft Cocktails is a welcome surprise in Goldsboro. The seafood tapas are creative, like a seared tuna with a citrus glaze and shrimp with a spicy aioli. The decor is trendy, with a feminine touch that makes it feel more like a city spot than a small-town one. Service was exceptional, with staff explaining each dish as it came out. The cocktails are well-made and strong. It is a bit pricier than other options, but you are paying for the quality and the vibe. I would come here for a date night. Worth frequent visits if you like small plates.

Worth the stop for travelers

Sandpiper Seafood is a family-friendly spot that gets the basics right. The atmosphere is clean and calm, which is nice for bringing kids. The fried shrimp and fish were hot and perfectly seasoned, with a crisp coating that stayed crunchy. Our waitress was attentive and patient, even with a toddlers' menu request. The hush puppies were melt-in-your-mouth good, with a slight sweetness that worked. It is not a fancy place, but it does not pretend to be. For travelers passing through, it is a better stop than a fast-food joint. I left happy and full, with no complaints.

Blackened salmon and Coco Loco

Brisas Latín Cuisine surprised me with a blackened salmon that had a proper char and a buttery interior. The Coco Loco drink was tropical and strong, exactly what I needed after a long week. The menu leans Latin, but the seafood preparation feels thoughtful. Service was attentive without hovering. The space is modest, but the flavors are not. If you want something different from the usual fried fish, this is worth a try. I would come back for the salmon alone, though I might ask for extra sauce next time. The price was fair for the quality.

Saturday: 11 AM–1:30 PM
Highlights
Lunch-only takeout worth seeking
Daily hot plate specials
Excellent fried chicken
Consistent food and service

Stonewall's Restaurant & Grill only does lunch, and that is a shame because the fried chicken is excellent. The crust is craggy and peppery, and the meat stays moist. They also run daily hot plate specials that change, so there is always something new. The service is efficient, and the dining room feels like a classic meat-and-three. I found the takeout counter to be quick, which is handy for a workday. The sides are Southern standards, and they do them well. If you are in the area around noon, do not miss it. Just note that they close early, so plan accordingly.
