I will not pretend Danville is a breakfast destination, because I live here and I know better. But between the fried chicken sandwiches at Nana Karen's on Main and the Wednesday special at Danview Restaurant, you could eat well for a week without repeating a meal and still have room for a red velvet waffle at Cheyna's.

The range runs from a rooftop view at The Bee Hotel down to a travel center off 29 with an Arby's attached, and I tried all of it. I ate an Oreo waffle before noon and a fried tomato BLT that haunts me still.

That is the kind of commitment this list requires.

Highlights
Gracious staff, delicious food
Fried chicken breakfast sandwiches
Perfectly balanced Oreo waffles
Handles crowds flawlessly
Worth returning to Danville

Nana Karen's on Main handled a Saturday crowd like a minor inconvenience, and the staff did it with grace. The fried chicken breakfast sandwich is an architectural wonder, crispy and juicy, though the Oreo waffle stole my attention with its balance of sweetness and restraint. I ate it, regretted nothing, and immediately began calculating the drive back from wherever I live. The service is so polished it made me feel like a regular on my first visit. This place justifies a return trip to Danville all by itself, and I say that as someone who generally avoids returning anywhere.

Highlights
Best waffles in Danville
Chicken breading is fantastic
Three eateries share kitchen
Quick ten-minute service
Red Velvet waffle flavorful

Cheyna's Waffle Spot shares a kitchen with two other operations, yet the chaos never reaches the customer. My red velvet waffle arrived in ten minutes, which felt vaguely supernatural. The chicken breading is fantastic, crunchy and peppered, and the waffle itself is the best I have had in Danville, which sounds faint but is not. The service was brisk and friendly, and the shared space adds a certain improvisational energy. I left with syrup on my sleeve and a conviction that waffles should always be this efficient.

Highlights
Wednesday fried chicken is superb
Generous portions, exceptional prices
Friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere
Extensive menu with daily specials
Warm, inviting local diner vibe

Danview Restaurant is a proper diner, and the Wednesday fried chicken special is the reason to plan your week around it. Portions arrive with the enthusiasm of someone who has never met a diet, and the prices are low enough to make me question my own arithmetic. The staff greet you like a neighbor, and the atmosphere is warm without trying too hard. The menu is extensive, and the daily specials rotate with a rhythm that suggests someone cares about variety. I ate there twice in one day, and I am not ashamed.

Diverse cultural lunch menu
Clean, friendly, welcoming atmosphere
Affordable, high-quality options

Megabytes Cafe offers a lunch menu that spans cultures with an assurance that surprises for a small cafe. The room is clean, the service is friendly, and the prices are reasonable enough to make fast food feel like a luxury tax. I ordered something unfamiliar and was rewarded with a dish that tasted like care and attention. The atmosphere is welcoming without being performative, and the chairs are comfortable enough to linger. This is a place where you can eat well, pay little, and still feel like you have discovered something.

Highlights
Fried tomato BLT fantastic
Best pastrami ever had
Authentic New York Reuben
Worth every penny

Godfather's Downtown Deli, another Nana Karen's venture, serves a fried tomato BLT that I still think about at odd hours. The pastrami is the best I have ever had, and I say that with the authority of someone who has eaten a lot of pastrami. The Reuben arrives with authentic New York credentials, all brine and sauerkraut and Russian dressing. The prices are justified, and I paid them without complaint. I left feeling like a smuggler who had gotten away with something.

Highlights

Friendly, communicative staff
Safe, clean, central location
Simple, grab-and-go breakfast
Historic buildingโ€™s rich feel

The Bee Hotel occupies a historic building, and the rooftop offers a view of Danville that makes the city look more heroic than it probably is. The staff are communicative and friendly, and the check-in process is refreshingly straightforward. My room was safe and clean, and the breakfast is simple, a grab-and-go affair that suits people who prefer coffee over ceremony. The elevator is old, the corridors creak, but the building's history wraps around you like a quilt. I slept well, and that is the highest compliment I can offer.

Highlights
Clean rooms with balconies
Walkable River District location
Simple keypad check-in
Ample rear parking available

Vantage Art Flats offers clean rooms with balconies that let you watch the River District wake up without leaving your pajamas. The keypad check-in is simple, almost impersonal, but the parking is ample and the location is walkable to everything worthwhile. My room had no art, which felt like a missed opportunity given the name, but the bed was firm and the sheets were clean. You come here for the location and the quiet, not the amenities. I appreciated that it did not pretend to be something else.

Highlights
Friendly staff, clean rooms
Simple, satisfying breakfast options
Comfortable bedding, cool rooms
Safe, welcoming hotel experience

Holiday Inn Express Danville delivers exactly what the sign promises, and I mean that as a genuine honor. The staff are friendly, and the rooms are clean with bedding that tempts you to stay past checkout. The breakfast is simple, eggs and sausage and waffles, nothing more, but it is satisfying in the way a plain bagel is satisfying. The room stayed cool, which matters more than I care to admit. It is a safe, welcoming experience that does not try to be anything else, and I respect that.

Highlights
Spacious store with Arby's
Convenient US 29 access
Decent staff service
Clean, well-maintained interior

Pilot Travel Center is a spacious stop on US 29, and it comes with an Arby's, which is both convenient and mildly deflating. The interior is clean and well-maintained, and the staff provided decent service without any enthusiasm. I grabbed a breakfast sandwich that was better than I expected, though the bar was low. The store is vast, and you could wander it like a museum of highway conveniences. It is not a destination, but if you need gas and eggs, it will not disappoint.

Highlights
Quick, friendly service
Fresh, delicious food
Professional order-taking staff

Bojangles is a fast food place, but the staff take orders with a professionalism that borders on theatrical. My biscuit was fresh, the fried chicken was crispy, and the service was quick enough to make me wonder if they knew I was coming. The food is delicious in the way that fried food always is, and I ate it in my car, which added to the romance. The employees are efficient, and the place is clean for what it is. I left with grease on my chin and no regrets.

Saturday: 7 AMโ€“3 PM
Highlights
Churro donuts worth sharing
Southern Fried Arnold massive
Hashbrown casserole standout dish
Yolk-inspired decor memorable
Coffee good, not first-rate

The Toasted Yolk Cafe has a memorably yolk-themed decor that I found charming rather than absurd. The churro donuts are worth sharing, if only because eating three alone makes you feel like a cautionary tale. The Southern Fried Arnold is massive, a fried chicken and gravy tower that I attacked with a fork and white flag. The hashbrown casserole is a standout, creamy and crisp, and the coffee is good, though not first-rate. I left full, slightly defeated, and strangely fond of the place.

Highlights
Friendly, attentive waitstaff
Tasty French toast options
Warm, inviting atmosphere
Homemade mashed potatoes
Reliable return-visit charm

Riverside Cafe has the kind of waitstaff that remember your order and your name, which is either a gift or a surveillance operation, but I prefer to think it is kindness. The French toast is tasty, thick and eggy, and the homemade mashed potatoes appeared at breakfast without judgment. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the kind of place where the regulars nod at you. The portions are generous, and the prices are fair. I left planning my return, which is the highest compliment I can give a breakfast spot.
