Let’s be honest: ranking wings in Fayetteville is a fool’s errand, but here we are. You’ll brave the indifferent stares at Wing Co.

Express downtown and then chase that disappointment with a perfect honey porter at Gaston Brewing, because this town refuses to make things simple. From the absurdly good bacon jam burgers to the questionable chicken at Mitch's Tavern, we ate the soggy, the sublime, and the sincerely weird.

Go forth and argue with the list.

Highlights
Good food, poor service
Fairly clean, central location
Soggy wings, steep prices
Unwelcoming, distracted staff
Six-ounce drink pours

Wing Co. Express sits in a central spot, which is about the only thing it has going for it. The food is decent, sure, but the service is a study in indifference. My wings arrived soggy, and the price tag made me check the receipt twice. Six-ounce drink pours feel like a prank, honestly. The place is fairly clean, but the staff seemed more invested in their phones than in my existence. I left underwhelmed and slightly poorer. A real missed opportunity.

Bacon jam burgers earn repeat visits
Jalapeno popper eggrolls are amazing
Honey porter is absolutely perfect
Service fast, waitresses awesome
Outdoor seating for nice weather

Gaston Brewing Restaurant is the kind of place you go for the beer and stay for the bacon jam burger. The honey porter is dangerously close to perfect, and I mean that as a compliment. The jalapeno popper eggrolls are a ridiculous indulgence that somehow works. Service is fast, and the waitresses actually seem to enjoy their jobs, which is a rare commodity. Outdoor seating is a bonus when the weather cooperates. I came for wings; I left planning a return trip for everything else.

Karaoke night is best
Flavorful lamb chops
Prompt, friendly service
Open, spread-out space
Worth a return visit

Uptown's Chicken and Waffles is a spacious spot that feels open and uncluttered. The karaoke night is the real draw, but the food holds its own. The lamb chops are flavorful, which is not something I expected to say about a chicken and waffles joint. Service is prompt and friendly, a welcome departure from the usual downtown shrug. It's a place that warrants a return visit, if only to see if the wings measure up to the chops. They do not disappoint, but the chops are better. Go for the show.

Oxtail empanadas surprise winner

Taste Of West Africa is a small operation with a big surprise. The oxtail empanadas are the unexpected winner here, and I am not complaining. The wings are serviceable, but they are not the reason to visit. This place rewards the curious. The flavors are bold and unfamiliar, which is a refreshing change. The staff is patient and willing to guide you through the menu. I came for wings; I left with a new favorite. Go with an open mind and an empty stomach.

Little Italy Restaurant & Pizzeria is a quiet spot, ideal for a date night where you actually want to talk. The waiter service is phenomenal, attentive without being intrusive. The pizza is worth craving later, which is a dangerous quality in this town. The wings are an afterthought here, but that is fine. You do not come to Little Italy for the wings. You come for the atmosphere and the pizza. Both deliver. This is a solid, dependable choice.

Solid Pad Thai value

Thai Lanna Restaurant serves lunch portions that border on absurd. The pad thai is a solid value, and the heat levels are customizable, which is a welcome feature. The staff is friendly and attentive, and they do not rush you. The wings are fine, though they are clearly not the focus. The curries are better. This is a reliable spot for a hearty lunch. Just be prepared to take half of it home. The leftovers are worth it.

Rude Awakening coffee house is a curious name for a place that feels so welcoming. The iced coffee flight is worth trying, and the monthly rotation of flights gives you a reason to return. The decor pays tribute to historic women, which is a thoughtful touch. The back seating area is cozy, perfect for hiding with a book. The barista service is friendly and quick. The wings here are a myth, but that is not why you come. You come for the coffee and the calm.

Best pho in town

Saigon Bistro is family-owned and genuinely welcoming. The staff anticipates your needs before you even ask, which is a rare gift. The vegan options are excellent, which makes this a go-to for plant-based friends. The pho is the best in town, and I will not argue with anyone on that point. The wings are not the draw, but they are respectable. This is a place that makes you feel like a regular on your first visit. That is worth something.

Highlights
Cheap, normal, comfortable bar
Wing night leaves much desired
No fryer, questionable chicken
Staff offers zero apologies

Mitch's Tavern is cheap, normal, and comfortable, which is exactly what a bar should be. The wing night, however, leaves much to be desired. The chicken tastes questionable, and there is no fryer, which explains a lot. The staff offers zero apologies. They have seen your disappointed face before. This is a place for cheap beer and uncomplicated company, not for wing excellence. Adjust your expectations and you will survive. I did.

Top-tier Eastern NC barbecue
Catfish worth the wait
Sandwiches vanish quickly
Rivals legendary local pits

Bar-B-Que Hut is the real deal when it comes to Eastern NC barbecue. The catfish is worth the wait, and the sandwiches vanish quickly for a reason. The wings are not the main event, but they are fine. This place rivals the legendary local pits, and I mean that as high praise. The service is straightforward and efficient. Come hungry and leave happy. Just do not expect fancy plating. You are here for the meat, not the presentation.

Saturday: 8 AM–10 PM
Highlights
Dairy-free entire menu
BBQ nachos are exceptional
Friendly, attentive staff
Gluten-free options clearly labeled

Element Gastropub deserves a medal for its dairy-free menu, which is a rarity in this town. The BBQ nachos are exceptional, and I say that as someone who usually views nachos as a vehicle for cheese. The staff is friendly and attentive without hovering. Gluten-free options are clearly labeled, which is a thoughtful touch. The wings here are solid, though the real stars are the sides. It is a good place to bring a friend with dietary restrictions. I will be back.

A return visit planned

301 Wingz charges a price that makes you wince, but then you taste the wings and understand the math. The buffalo tray is a proper craving-killer. Straight fries and decent sides round out the meal without any drama. The Greek salad is a surprisingly fresh counterpoint to the grease. The staff is efficient, and the place has a no-nonsense vibe. I already have a return visit planned. You pay for quality, and here, you get it.
